"Mama" Cass Elliot

Born in 1941, in Maryland, Ellen Naomi Cohen started her singing and acting career at a very early age. Among her earliest works included touring in a production of the "Music Man" and she even competed with Babara Striesand in the musical "I can get it for you Wholesale." Mama also worked with a few musical groups, including one called "The Big Three" and the "Mugwumps", but of course she is best known for her work in the "Mama's and the Papa's" where her distinct voice, forged the sound of a somewhat folksy/bluesy style. Mama Cass' voice was simple & sweet and I personally get a joy out of hearing the classics such as "Monday, Monday" and of course, "California Dreamin'". Although not as well known as this legendary band, Mama also had a short, but great solo career, and she also made many television appearences including The Tonight show.

Sadly, Mama Cass died of a heart attack at a young age, but her spirit & voice live and influence many women singers of today. In 1998, Mama Cass & the rest of the Mama's & the Papa's were inducted into the Rock & Roll hall of fame. Mama Cass Elliot, indeed, is a legend of folk rock music.
